The concept of flexible spaces has never become more understood or apparent,  as people across the globe have evolved to a new dynamic in their home and working lives. The typical home has a room which tends to be the “hub”, where all the main activities take place – cooking, eating, watching television, browsing social media and entertaining guests. It is highly likely that this same space has had to quickly evolve in recent times in order to accommodate new roles and purposes; classroom, office, workout space, meditation room, dance floor... to name just a few.

One of the simplest and most effective ways of switching from one task to another is to change the lighting. Typically, a higher light level and whiter light is most effective for tasks requiring concentration, such as preparing food or to work. Then as the day shifts into evening and night, a lower light level and warmer light helps to create a relaxing and soothing space.

The reason these types of light levels and Correlated Colour Temperatures (CCTs) are preferred for different tasks is linked to the human evolution under the light of the sun. A typical day of light will shift from a low, yellowy-orange at the beginning of the day, to a high light level which contains lots of blue light during the middle of the day, and then shifts back to a low yellowy-orange light in the evening until the sun disappears altogether. This exposure to daylight is what supports our biological system in understand what it should be doing; in short – energise the body ready for action and activity, or slowing down ready for sleep. The effect of sunlight is replicated in man-made lighting products and it is possible to see this via the CCT and luminous flux

values, albeit this is generally a more concise range than that offered by the sun. In order to replicate this via combinations of light level and CCT in one’s home, a control system is often required, and typically a range of lighting products are needed to execute the effect.

1901 Dim to Warm is controlled via a mains dimmer – no need for complex control systems – and allows the user to opt for a 3000K light level at full output, or pick a light level and colour temperature that suits the task at hand as the product is simultaneously dimmed and warmed all the way down to a relaxing 1800K at around 10% light level.
