Upcoming lighting regulations

Compliance with SLR regulations, upcoming September 2021

The UK Government recently announced the ban of sale of Halogen lamps from September 2021, in line with the Single Lighting Regulations (SLR). SLR also captures the phase out of older product technologies, such as CFLs.

The legislation is aimed at improving product performance across the industry and is generally in favour of LED lighting, which will increase adoption rates across the country.

One element of the regulations is regarding replaceability of light sources and associated componentry, ultimately to reduce wastage of materials. This is not as sweeping as it may sound, meaning that it is perfectly acceptable to have a technical justification for not having replacement light sources or control gear.

An example of this is the Collingwood spike lights and the ground lights. The nature of where these products are typically installed, in outdoor areas, means that IP rating is crucial to the performance. As a result, we seal them for life and have technical justification for doing so.

Fire rated downlights will largely remain unchanged from where they are today. Depending on the product, IP65 ratings on the product fall under technical justification. The light sources will be able to be replaced by professionals, using commonly available tools.

Collingwood Lighting products comply with all these regulations and we are in a strong position to supply high quality, effective lighting both now and in the future.

We will be showing information about the replaceability of each product on the relevant website page, including easy-to-understand pictograms.
